5 Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

Winter’s on the way, and so is the extra electrical load that comes with it. Heaters, electric blankets, slow cookers, more time spent indoors with devices running, your switchboard handles all of it.

For most homes on the Central Coast, that’s fine. But for older homes or properties that haven’t had an electrical upgrade in years, winter is when problems tend to surface. Tripping circuits, flickering lights, breakers that won’t reset. These aren’t just annoying, they are warning signs.

Here are five signs your switchboard is overdue for an update.

1. Your switchboard still has ceramic fuses

Ceramic fuses were standard in Australian homes built before the 1980s. If you open your switchboard and see small cream/white ceramic fuses rather than modern circuit breakers, your board is out of date.

Ceramic fuses don’t trip the way modern breakers do. When a fault occurs, they blow and replacing them requires handling live components unless the main switch is off. More importantly, they don’t offer the same level of protection against overloads.

If your board has ceramic fuses, it should be upgraded. Full stop.

2. Your circuits trip regularly

The occasional tripped breaker isn’t a problem. But if you’re resetting the same circuit every few weeks, or every time you run the heater and the kettle at the same time, that’s a sign your board isn’t keeping up with the demand on your home or there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Modern homes use significantly more power than homes from 20 or 30 years ago. More appliances, more devices, induction cooktops, EV chargers. If your switchboard was designed for a different era, it’ll struggle with today’s load.

3. There are no safety switches on your board

Safety switches (RCDs) are designed to cut power within milliseconds if they detect a fault, protecting people from electric shock. They’re not the same as circuit breakers, which protect wiring from overload.

In NSW, safety switches are required on all new and significantly renovated homes. But older boards often have none, or only one covering part of the home. If yours doesn’t have safety switches on every circuit, you don’t have adequate protection.

4. Your switchboard feels warm or you can smell burning

A switchboard that radiates heat or carries a faint burning smell needs immediate attention. These are signs of loose connections, overloaded circuits, or failing components – all of which are fire risks.

Don’t wait on this one. If your board is warm or smells like it’s burning, call a licensed electrician today.

5. You’re adding significant new loads to your home

Installing a ducted air conditioning system, an EV charger, a spa or pool pump, or solar panels? These all add a significant load to your electrical system. An older switchboard may not be rated for the additional demand, and attempting to connect high-draw appliances without upgrading the board first is a safety and compliance issue.
